Hey Meg! We’ve come a long way

Do you remember the 70′s cigarette commercial with the jingle “You’ve come a long way, baby?”  It was a lame attempt to market tobacco to modern independent women.   Didn’t think much of the slogan then, but the jingle lived on long after the marketing campaign.

I was reminded of the catchy phrase when I saw the headlines about all the women around the country who won elections on Tuesday.  The one standout for me was Meg Whitman.  Politics aside, it was amazing that she spent close to $100 million bucks of her own money during the campaign.  Now that’s coming a long way baby!!!  Not sure it’s all that good for the democratic process.  But I do think it’s great that a woman was a tremendous corporate success and has the resources to go for something else she believes in. Regardless what the people of California decide, Meg Whitman deserves credit for smashing another glass ceiling!

Meg Whitman BOUGHT her way through the ceiling. I’m not impressed, and hope she loses the election in November.

Thanks for your comment, Nikki. That’s exactly my point. Men have been buying seats in Congress for a very long time. Don’t think that’s great for us or the institution. I just think it’s worth noticing that a woman was able to do it with her own self-made resources.

Yes! Seems women are thought of differently than men when it comes to “success” …still…after all this time.. The All American basketball player, Nancy Lieberman, ESPN sports… now coaching a new bb team.. tells the story… A reporter commented to her once in an interview that she seemed to be
(implied) self serving…with all the self promotions she did – commercials – spokesperson..etc. … Her comment back was: Has anyone ever criticised Michael Jordan for making MILLIONS upon MILLIONS promoting himself?? I never forgot that… and have told it many times over… It’s true… men are though of as “strong”…etc… and when a woman is able to accomplish things on her own… she is considered…..well…. often times “less”…. or a “Witch” ? or worse.. I happen to LOVE strong…successful women… and if we don’t believe in ourselves? who will? AND besides.. we were given certain talents.. and we are expected to USE those talents and abilities to the best of our ability!!
Great blog, Lorraine!!! Can’t wait to get your new book!!! I have gotten a lot out of your “Give Your Elevator Speech a Lift”…. good luck on next one..

Thanks for your comment, Kay. It’s great to here from you. And thanks for the Nancy Lieberman story…double standards in just about every industry, even in the 21st century! Glad you like the book. The new info on personal branding has been well received so far. I should have the actual books very soon. The e-book version is already available through my site.
